Hard Vacuum Leak Testing Systems with Soundproofing

To meet the stringent noise requirements of an automotive parts manufacturing facility in the Czech Republic, we developed a specialised leak detection system for electric vehicle (EV) electrical box subassemblies.

The customer mandated a maximum noise level of 80 decibels (dB), a threshold comparable to common household appliances like vacuum cleaners or hairdryers, which are considered potentially harmful with prolonged exposure.

Our primary objective was to ensure the leak test system operated well within this limit, particularly addressing noise generated by the vacuum pump set and vacuum chamber.

Extraction fans were also incorporated to efficiently dissipate heat generated by the vacuum pump set, ensuring optimal operating temperatures within the enclosure.

VES engineers implemented a comprehensive sound mitigation strategy:

  • Full Soundproof Enclosure: A custom-designed enclosure was constructed to contain noise emissions during both leak test operational cycles and the initial high-volume start-up phase, which includes valve actuation.
  • Acoustic Absorption and Reflection: Interior walls and access doors were lined with high-performance sound-absorbing acoustic foam, while the enclosure roof was fitted with reflective panels to further minimize external noise propagation.
  • Integrated Thermal Management: Extraction fans were incorporated to efficiently dissipate heat generated by the vacuum pump set, ensuring optimal operating temperatures within the enclosure.

The result is a leak detection system that consistently operates significantly below the customer’s 80 dB noise limit, ensuring compliance with the facility’s safety regulations and providing a quieter, safer working environment.
