When you’re in the middle of an important production run, the word “standardised” can feel like a bit of a compromise. We’ve been conditioned to think that if a system isn’t custom-built from the ground up specifically for our floor, it’s somehow “less than.”
But after 30 years and over 1,600 machines at Vacuum Engineering Services (VES), we’ve noticed a frustrating pattern. Manufacturers, especially those of you in the HVAC, heat pump, and automotive sectors are often getting stuck between a rock and a hard place. On one side, you have low-cost “sniffer” systems that just aren’t accurate enough for modern standards. On the other, you have these massive, fully bespoke vacuum rigs that cost a fortune and take forever to arrive.
You don’t actually need a custom-built system to get world-class testing. You just need a system that was engineered by people who actually understand your day-to-day headaches.
The Problem with “Bespoke”
Don’t get us wrong, custom engineering has its place. But for many Test and Operations Engineers, “bespoke” is often just code for “long lead times” and “maintenance nightmares.”
If you’re trying to meet strict SEER or R134 regulations, you’re already under enough pressure. You shouldn’t have to wait six months for a machine, only to find out it doesn’t fit in your legacy floor space or that it requires a PhD to service. When a custom machine goes down, you’re often waiting for specialised parts that aren’t sitting on a shelf. That’s downtime you simply can’t afford.
A Better Way
We decided to take all the “gold star” tech from our most complex systems and make these features add-on options. So if you don’t need a feature, then we won’t spec it in the build. The result was the VES SLEEK.
We like to call it “value-engineered,” but in plain English, it just means we did the hard work of standardising the frame and the guts of the machine so you don’t have to pay for us to reinvent the wheel every time.
Here’s why this shift in thinking actually makes your life easier:
- You can scale as you go: One of the biggest stressors for a Capex buyer is over-committing. With SLEEK, you don’t have to buy a massive twin-chamber rig if you aren’t there yet. You can start with a single chamber and, when your production ramps up (like those seasonal heat pump surges), you just add the second module. It’s “pay as you grow” rather than “pay and hope.”
- It actually fits: Factory floor space is expensive. We’ve slimmed down the footprint—using a centralised cylinder and a compact cabinet—so you can actually fit this into your line without having to move three other machines.
- Safety without the complexity: If you’re testing high-pressure CO2 (R744) systems, safety is your #1 worry. Because SLEEK uses vacuum-based testing, it’s inherently safer than old-school pressure methods. You get the peace of mind without needing to build a literal bunker around your test station.
- Ready to roll in a week: Because it’s a standard platform, the installation doesn’t take months. We can often get you up and running in under a week.
Quality Isn’t About the Price Tag
Just because we’ve simplified the design doesn’t mean we’ve cut corners on the science. We still use the heavy hitters, Leybold pumps and Pfeiffer spectrometers, because accuracy is non-negotiable. Plus, we’ve made the system “helium recovery ready.” With the price of gas going through the roof, being able to reclaim up to 90% of your helium isn’t just a “nice to have”; it’s a survival strategy.
Let’s Get Practical
At VES, the primary objective is to empower manufacturers to ship components with total confidence. This requires testing systems defined by repeatability, maintainability, and budgetary efficiency.
Achieving high-quality results does not always necessitate a bespoke, one-of-a-kind machine. Often, a smart, modular system provides the necessary industrial-grade reliability while aligning with specific production goals.
For manufacturers looking to avoid the complexities of fully custom builds, a standardised platform offers a viable, high-performance solution. Our team are available to discuss how these systems can be tailored to meet your unique production requirements, ensuring robust testing without unnecessary operational overhead.
